Is GatherIRL just another group chat app?
Absolutely not. GatherIRL explicitly avoids infinite scrolling threads. You can't actually type a chat message here at all. It's built exclusively as a logistical coordination tool to bridge the 'initiative gap' and get you off your phone and into the living room.
How does the 'Availability Matching' work?
You simply tap blocks of time when you might be free, like "Sunday Afternoon" or "Friday Happy Hour". Zero hard commitments. When enough friends organically overlap on the same block, we send a gentle nudge suggesting a hangout, cutting out days of back-and-forth negotiation.
Who actually pays for this? Is it free?
GatherIRL is completely free for standard friend groups. We keep the servers running by partnering with local businesses for our "Hearth Premium" tier, where we algorithmically suggest curated, discounted venues (like a local brewery or board game cafe) for your group to meet at.
What if someone always flakes or bails?
The app utilizes a 'Low Stakes RSVP' mechanic. Friends can mark themselves as "Available if something happens" which removes the crippling pressure of formal RSVP commitments. If a core threshold of your group actually confirms, the event happens regardless of the stragglers. Less guilt, more gatherings.
Do I need an iPhone to use this?
Not at all. GatherIRL is launching as a Progressive Web App (PWA), meaning it works beautifully and frictionlessly on any device, whether you're using Safari on iOS or Chrome on Android. No app store lock-in.
Is it another social media app?
No. We are the anti-social media. Our goal is to get you off the app and into a room with your friends as quickly as possible.
How do you protect my privacy?
We never sell your calendar data. Our engine securely analyzes your free blocks to find overlap without storing the details of your actual calendar events. Once a match is found, your temporary data is flushed.
Do my friends need the app too?
No. When you suggest a Gather, they receive an interactive SMS link. They can RSVP and view the event details directly in their mobile browser without ever downloading the app or creating an account.
